Mitsui (8031) collaborates on microwave calcination for Quebec lithium project

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Canada's PMET Resources and Microwave Chemical to commence evaluation of microwave calcination technology for lithium refining in the Shaakichiuwaanaan Lithium Project, which PMET is advancing in Quebec. This partnership aims to leverage PMET's lithium resources, Mitsui & Co.'s expertise in project development, and Microwave Chemical's proprietary technology. The objective is to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate locally in Quebec, utilising the region's low-cost renewable hydropower.

Joint Evaluation of Lithium Refining Technology

This joint evaluation has the potential to contribute to enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the lithium supply chain. Local refining is expected to reduce transportation costs and environmental impact, while the use of renewable energy will promote the decarbonisation of the production process. Mitsui & Co., with its broad involvement across resource development and final products, is deepening its engagement in the lithium market, driven by the expanding demand for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Mitsui & Co.'s shares saw a slight decline on 19 June 2026, Japan time, following this announcement. The company's stock is currently trading at ¥4,689, down 0.6% from yesterday's close of ¥4,719. Earlier this week, on 16 June, shares experienced a temporary decline following reports that the US extended its waiver for Sakhalin-2 LNG imports.

What Does It Mean

Why Mitsui's Lithium Tech Evaluation Sees a Cautious Market Reaction

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. is a general trading company, a sogo shosha, that handles global trading, business investments, and project development across a wide range of fields, from energy to chemicals, food, and infrastructure. They build entire supply chains, from sourcing resources to processing and selling, generating revenue by providing goods and services to domestic and international client companies. Their business is significantly influenced by global economic trends and fluctuations in resource prices.

Today, Mitsui announced the signing of a non-binding memorandum of understanding with PMET Resources and Microwave Chemical to evaluate microwave calcination technology for lithium refining. This partnership aims to build an efficient and sustainable lithium supply chain that produces battery-grade lithium carbonate locally, utilising Quebec's abundant renewable energy. However, the market appears to have judged this move, at present, as an early-stage, non-binding evaluation, with uncertainty surrounding its concrete revenue contribution and feasibility.

This cautious assessment is reflected in Mitsui's (8031) share price, which is currently trading at ¥4,689, down 0.6% from yesterday's close of ¥4,719. This week also saw a temporary decline following reports on 16 June that the US extended its exemption for Sakhalin-2 LNG imports. Today's slight decline can be said to reflect the market's cautious view towards the evaluation of a new lithium refining technology, a project that, while promising for the future, carries high uncertainty at this stage.

This is much like a car manufacturer announcing they are embarking on the development of a revolutionary new engine, but it is still in the basic research phase, years away from mass production and market launch, and success is not guaranteed. Investors recognise the potential for significant future profits from such technology, yet at this point, considering the substantial research and development costs, time, and uncertainty regarding the final outcome, it is difficult for them to view it as a factor that would immediately push up the share price.
