ArcelorMittal (MTS) calls for urgent EU ETS reform as shares dip 3.2%

ArcelorMittal, alongside thyssenkrupp Steel and voestalpine, has called for urgent reforms to the European Union's Emissions Trading System (ETS). This plea coincided with ArcelorMittal (MTS) shares falling 3.2% to €55.96 on 18 June 2026. The current trading price compares with yesterday's close of €57.80.

The steel producers expressed concern that the existing ETS framework could undermine the European steel industry's competitiveness. They warned of a potential 50% increase in production costs by the early 2030s, which could lead to a 30-40% reduction in EU steel manufacturing and jeopardise up to 5 million jobs.

Today's decline extends a weekly downtrend for ArcelorMittal. The stock had advanced strongly on 12 June following positive analyst sentiment and strategic developments and solid quarterly results. However, shares have since recorded several consecutive sessions of losses, with the current price marking the lowest point of the week.

What Does It Mean

Why EU Emissions Rules Are Weighing on ArcelorMittal

ArcelorMittal is a global titan in steel production and mining. Its core business involves extracting iron ore and transforming it into a vast array of steel products, from sheets and coils to structural profiles and wires. These materials are fundamental to construction, the automotive industry, appliance manufacturing, and numerous other sectors. Essentially, their customers are other businesses that rely on steel for their own products or infrastructure projects, and ArcelorMittal generates revenue by selling these steel products on a massive scale across international markets.

Today's share price movement largely stems from concerns surrounding the European Union's Emissions Trading System (ETS). ArcelorMittal, like other major steel producers, has warned that the current ETS framework could inflate its production costs by as much as 50% by the early 2030s. This significant increase in operating expenses poses a real risk, potentially leading to a 30% to 40% decline in intensive steel manufacturing within the EU, which would jeopardise millions of jobs and the long-term economic viability of the company's European operations.

This apprehension about future cost pressures is clearly reflected in ArcelorMittal's trading today, 18 June 2026. The company's shares are trading down 3.2% at €55.96, a notable drop from yesterday's close of €57.80, marking its lowest point this week.

Imagine a clothing manufacturer that suddenly faces a new regulation making their production costs significantly higher for every garment they produce, while their international competitors operate without such a burden. This manufacturer would be forced to either raise prices, making them less competitive, or absorb the extra costs, eroding their profits. The EU ETS creates a similar competitive imbalance for ArcelorMittal, impacting its ability to compete effectively in the global steel market.
