Santander (SAN) posts record underlying profit, reversing earlier declines by 3.1%

Santander reported robust first-quarter 2026 financial results, sending its shares up 3.1% to €10.80 on Friday. The advance reverses earlier week declines for the Spanish bank, which had traded at €10.47 at Thursday's close.

The large Spanish lender posted a record underlying profit of €3.56 billion for the first quarter, marking a 12% increase year-on-year. Attributed profit reached €5.50 billion, a 60% rise, partly due to a €1.90 billion net capital gain from the sale of Santander Bank Polska. Additionally, Fitch Ratings assigned expected ratings to Santander Bank Auto Credit-Linked Series 2026-A notes on June 11, 2026, contributing to positive market sentiment.

Today's trading sees Santander clawing back losses observed earlier in the week, following Tuesday's 1.1% dip and Wednesday's 0.4% fall. The current price places the stock above its recent trading range, marking a recovery for the financial institution.

What Does It Mean

Why Santander's Record Profits and Strategic Sale Are Boosting Shares

Santander is a major Spanish bank that acts as a financial intermediary. In simple terms, it takes money from individuals and businesses in the form of savings and current accounts, and then lends that money out as credits, mortgages, and project financing. It makes its money primarily from the interest charged on those loans and from fees for managing various financial products, from insurance to asset management.

Today's positive movement in Santander's shares is directly tied to the announcement of its robust first-quarter 2026 results. The bank reported a record underlying profit of €3.56 billion, marking a 12% increase compared to the same period last year. This strong performance was further amplified by an attributable profit of €5.5 billion, a notable 60% jump, largely driven by a €1.9 billion net capital gain from the strategic sale of Santander Bank Polska. This highlights not just operational strength but also smart asset management.

This excellent news has seen Santander's shares rise by 3.1% today, and the stock is currently trading at €10.80, a significant improvement from its previous close of €10.47.

Imagine a large property developer that not only announces it has completed a major building project significantly under budget and ahead of schedule, but also reveals it successfully sold off an underutilised plot of land for a much higher price than expected. Investors would see a company that is both efficient in its core business and savvy in managing its broader assets, leading to a surge in confidence and share value.
